When first starting the company in 1973 I was lecturing in Florida. An attractive, young lady approached me with her baby who had a "Rare Skin Disease." She was told by her doctors that "It was incurable." Poison would just keep on producing and seeping through the pores building a "Caked Crust" on the surface of the baby's skin. Drug firms spend big bucks on doctors, get results

Each year drug companies target the nation's physicians, spending between $8,000 and $13,000 per doctor, plying them with meals, gifts and travel subsidies, says an analysis out today. And the expense pays off in loyal prescribers.
Doctors courted by drug company representatives are more likely to ask health plans to pay for heavily promoted drugs, to ask hospitals to add them to their inventories and to make "non-rational" prescribing decisions, such as ordering a more expensive or more potent drug than needed, the report says.
"Physicians are human; they can be influenced," says Ashley Wazana of McGill University in Montreal, author of the study in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
Wazana based his analysis on a search of the medical literature, which turned up 29 studies that examined the dynamics of the drug industry's sales practices. The studies probed the extent of doctors' contacts with drug company reps, doctors' attitudes about the contacts and how the relationships affected the doctors.
Wazana says drug reps begin building relationships with doctors-to-be in medical school. Contacts continue after a new doctor enters practice.
Although doctors recognize that drug companies attempt to influence their decisions, the analysis shows, they mistakenly believe "that they could not be influence.
Physicians learn about drugs almost entirely from sales reps, says Raymond Woosley, an expert on pharmacology and physician training at Georgetown University Medical School.
He notes that most medical schools offer just one course in pharmacology. Moreover, 70% of the top 200 drugs on the market weren't available when the average middle-aged doctor went to medical school.
Although the American Medical Association, the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) and some other groups have adopted voluntary guidelines for relationships between doctors and sales reps, Woosley says, "it's clear that the guidelines don't work" and that abuses occur every day.
In a commentary with Wazana's analysis, the AMA's Robert Tenery laments the "glaring lack of adequate guidelines" in the USA and Canada.
"Even more troubling," Tenery says, "is the apparent lack of awareness of these adverse influences, even by the participants themselves."
He calls for industry standards to govern the relationship between sales reps and physicians - and he notes that the medical profession and drug companies "have the same obligations to ensure that they are properly enforced."
PhRMA spokesman Jeff Trewhitt says his group has not yet reviewed the study.
